    settling down

Moved to Wolfville, NS in September and have been busy since then. I am teaching 4 days a week now, which is quite a change compared to my life of doing research everyday for the past 6 years. Still struggling with it, but hopefully it will become easier.

Today, I finally got around to applying for a local plate for my car. This is probably the last step of my move. I have gotten a local driver's license, a local heath card, a local insurance policy, etc. Now with this last step done, it seems permanant. So here is the town I am living in, a college town with a population of 3000, excluding 3000 students.

    PhD

After all these years, I finally received my PhD. I can be called "Dr. Wang" now! Open-mouthed Not as excited as I thought I would be. But it is definitely something worth celebrating.

    I can take a hint

Today when I came to school, I found I couldn't use my card to enter the PhD area where my office is. Phoebe told me months ago that this would happen. By default, a card becomes invalid after 5 years in the program. OK, I got the message. Just get it done and move on. This place has had enough of me and vice versa.

    I like warm weather

It is nice to drive with windows down. Saw a guy drive a Porsche convertible today on the road. That must be fun.

    Have a bright screen again

I have been bothered the dim LCD on my laptop. Nothing to complain about because it is a 5-year old laptop. After studying others' experiences on the internet, I finally decided to change the backlight lamp of the LCD by myself and bought the part on ebay. Yesterday, it arrived. I spent about 3 hours on it and now I have a bright screen again. Open-mouthed

    stuck

Haven't updated my blog for quite a while. Part of the reason is that nothing exciting has happened. However, the more important reason is that I don't want to be a whiner. Won't say much as that may make me a whiner already. Just trying to get by.

     今天要问点信息,给几个同学打了电话,突然觉得还是老同学亲切啊。打算在国外工作了,想到不能和大家厮混很是郁闷。

Hiring a copy editor for important documents

Trust me on this, it is necessary to hire a copy editor for important documents, especially when you are lack of patience, like me. Just had my job application materials proofread. It is actually not so expensive, $40 for the cover letter, teaching philosophy and research statement all together. I was so surprised to find out about the very basic spelling mistakes after several revisions I've made. Your supervisor may look out for you on this, however, he might overlook small things. I regret that I hadn't hired a copy editor before I sent out my first job application. In a profession where presentation is everything, it could be fatal. Sad

Cannot believe it... made a very stupid mistake in most of the cover letters I sent out. Praying that they wouldn't notice it. CryingCryingCrying

    Get up early and exercise

Today is the first day of my new life style.  Open-mouthed Got up at 7am and went swimming. It actually felt good though I was exhausted after only about 30 minutes. Didn't feel more sleepy than usual. Another good thing is that I finally got to park in a closer parking lot. Hope I can keep doing this.

Defended my thesis proposal today. So there are only two things left: get a job and finish the thesis.

    a lazy saturday

Don't feel like doing anything even though my proposal defense is scheduled on Monday. I have a t-shirt that says "I am not unmotivated... I am just lazy". Well, I think I might actually be the opposite. Sarcastic

    trip to Colorado

I went to Keystone, Colorado last weekend for a conference. Did not know it was that high. The first night I got a little altitude illness. Nothing serious, just a little headache. The place is beautiful. I went to the Rocky Mountain National Park and realized it was different from the Canadian Rockies in terms of more rocks and different plants. Driving was quite fun with all the down hills and sharp turns.

I had my first conference interview there. It went OK except that I don't have the teaching experience they want. It could be, actually is likely to be, a deal breaker. Anyways, it is going to be a tough job market for me.

    Things keep breaking

My things keep breaking recently. The exhaust pipe on my car broke twice. The wheel bearings on my car broke. Then the hard drive on my laptop physically crashed. The chair I am sitting on right now lost the function of moving up and down. The most weird thing is that the windshield on my car suddently had a big crack yesterday. If things keep breaking like this, I am going to be broke soon.

    Officically on the job market

Sent out my first job application last night. Now I am officially on the job market. Unfortunately, the market is bad. I'll do my things and see what happens.

    Ottawa

Went to Ottawa for a conference last weekend. Going to this conference has become an annual get-away for me. I only showed up for about 2 hours at the conference and spent the rest of time on sightseeing. Ottawa is a beautiful city and has some historical places to go. The museum of civilization is amazing.
